Convert square meters, square feet, acres, hectares, square miles and more with exact factors.
How area conversion works
Area units are squared length units, which is why their factors look extreme: a square mile contains over 2.5 million square meters. Metric land measurement favors the hectare (10,000 m²), while real estate in the US and UK uses acres and square feet.
| Unit | Equals |
| 1 Square centimeter (cm²) | 0.0001 m² |
| 1 Square meter (m²) | base unit |
| 1 Hectare (ha) | 10000 m² |
| 1 Square kilometer (km²) | 1000000 m² |
| 1 Square inch (in²) | 0.00064516 m² |
| 1 Square foot (ft²) | 0.092903 m² |
| 1 Square yard (yd²) | 0.836127 m² |
| 1 Acre (ac) | 4046.86 m² |
| 1 Square mile (mi²) | 2589990 m² |

Common mistakes to avoid
- Mixing up ounces. The Weight category uses the ounce (oz), a unit of mass (28.3495 g). The Volume category uses the US fluid ounce (fl oz), a unit of capacity (29.5735 mL). One fluid ounce of water weighs about 1.04 oz, not exactly 1 oz, so always confirm which category you are in before converting.
- Confusing bits and bytes. File sizes are measured in bytes, network speeds in bits. In Data storage, 1 byte equals 8 bits, so a 100 Mbit per second connection transfers at most 12.5 megabytes per second.
- Assuming imperial gallons. Every volume unit here is US customary: 1 US gallon is 3.785 liters. A UK imperial gallon is 4.546 liters, roughly 20 percent larger, so results will not match UK fuel economy figures.
A quick accuracy check
Want to sanity-check any converter? Convert -40 from Celsius to Fahrenheit: the result must be exactly -40, the only temperature where the two scales meet. Then convert 0 Kelvin to Celsius: you should get -273.15, absolute zero. A converter that handles both edge cases correctly has sound temperature formulas, and this one does.
Frequently asked questions
How many square feet are in an acre?
Exactly 43,560 square feet. An acre is about 4,046.86 square meters, or 0.4047 hectares — historically the area a team of oxen could plow in a day.
What is the difference between a hectare and an acre?
A hectare is metric: 10,000 m², a square of 100 m × 100 m. An acre is imperial: 43,560 ft² ≈ 4,047 m². One hectare equals about 2.471 acres.
